Marshall Hall - Biography

Born the son of an artist, Marshall discovered the magic of art at a very early age, under his father’s tutelage. By seven years old, he was already creating original works in oil and watercolor, two of which took first and third prize in the children’s division of the Laguna Beach Festival of the Arts. By eleven years of age, acrylic had become Marshall’s medium of choice.

Following his passion through high school and college at UC Santa Barbara, Marshall stayed within his chosen field, learning the basics of design in graphics and layout, all the while pursuing his vision on canvas through various galleries and shows.

In 1991, after working as a subcontractor for various commercial mural studios, Marshall collaborated with Nancy Rosenberg to establish Marshall Art Studios, Inc., providing artwork for restaurants, hotels and casinos nationwide. For several years this enterprise dominated the artist’s time and focus.

Returning to his roots, Marshall has created a new line of artwork that combines many of his continuing concepts and philosophies with the gesture and vibrant color sense that has developed over the many years of commercial work.

“It’s difficult to be yourself when you’ve been trained to imitate and emulate any style of work in order to benefit the needs of the clientele, but it’s taken all of those many experiences for me to arrive at a method of communication that feels completely like my own. It hasn’t been a matter of choosing so much as a process of elimination. I’ve mastered and moved through so many techniques and genres that the only thing left is me.”

Outside of his work in visual media, Marshall is always involved in a variety of other forms of communication. Music being a part of his passion, he has recorded and produced more than five albums of his original songs. If he’s not in the art studio painting, Marshall can usually be found behind a guitar or microphone in the music studio. He can also take credit for writing a science fiction novel, several short stories, two children’s books and poetry as well.

From the very beginning, Marshall has been motivated to express his vision through all variety of mediums, but it is through his work on canvas Marshall has always felt most at home.
