J. Patrick Bowman's Artist Statement:
The collecting of light, shadow, color and texture: this is why I'm a photographer. My artistic philosophy is 'finding the unusual in the ordinary'. This leads me to look at ordinary things in different ways. When I look through the camera lens, see the unusual and then capture that moment on film, I have initiated the process of collecting light, shadow, color, and texture. The magic of photography, for me, is that what I see through the lens is transferred in a manner that faithfully depicts the complex, underlying scheme that first engaged me. This transference takes place as I work through the process of editing images and producing prints.
The sensibilities used in capturing images are again called upon as prints are created. Having control over the final output is important to me as an artist. My name is on that art; it is a reflection of who I am. I scan, edit, and print images in my own 'digital darkroom' to assure quality. Prints are made using archival fine art papers and inks. Presentation is made complete by matting with archival materials and framing under glass in sturdy, wood frames. My satisfaction comes when I look at the finished product and know that it depicts the original image, is well produced, and will be enjoyed for many generations.
